Make It Right: Green Housing in New Orleans

Posted on | January 9, 2009 | No Comments

As reported by Treehugger, some of the first homes built by Brad Pitt’s Make It Right Foundation are just finishing up in New Orleans’ 9th Ward, site of some of the greatest devastation after Hurricane Katrina. Many of the new homes are designed by contemporary architects and only resemble traditional shotgun-style houses in their overall shape. Their most important characteristic, however, is a new feature, and it’s in response to what caused the problems in the first place – they are all built on stilts or in some way elevated off of the ground plane. As Treehugger says, “If the ocean should ever intrude again, these new homes could be high enough off the ground to clear the floodwaters, a simple solution to end the debate about whether or not to rebuild the 9th Ward at all.”
