Kill-a-Watt! … and save some money, too

Posted on | February 1, 2009 | No Comments

If you want to save yourself some money by saving energy, one way to do this is to figure out how much electricity you already use. It’s one thing to unplug small appliances when not in use, but what about your larger appliances?  Do you know how much electricity they use?  Well, you can figure it out with a device called Kill-a-Watt.  This device is plugged into a regular outlet and then your appliance is plugged into it:  it will start measuring electricity consumption by the kilowatt-hour, just like the utility company.  You can keep track of what’s costing you the most on your bill each month, and what barely makes a dent in your energy consumption.  If you know how much energy you use, then you can more easily cut down, right?

And, if you REALLY want to save money by, for instance, not purchasing your own Kill-a-Watt meter, perhaps you can lobby your local library to purchase a large amount for public use, just like the Ottawa Public Library did.  Unless you already live in Ottawa, in which case, congratulations!  You can walk down the library and take one out, just like book.  :o )
