Still need to be convinced about climate change?

WELL:  if you are not into “facts”, “studies” and / or “science”; AND you think that global warming (or global “weirding” as I sometimes like to call it) is all a bunch of baloney; AND, you still can’t be convinced by nifty maps such as this Climate Wizard map produced by the Nature Conservancy…

Areas of the U.S. which will be most affected by climate change

Areas of the U.S. which will be most affected by climate change

…may I present to you this photo that I took over the weekend of the Station Fire in Southern California.  No, this is NOT a photo of a volcano erupting.  It’s a giant wildfire that’s consumed over 120,000 acres, as of this writing.  And it’s nowhere near contained.

Why this fire is significant, and why it pertains to global warming/weirding, is that it’s not even fire season in Southern California right now.  That technically doesn’t start until next month, when the fierce Santa Ana winds start to kick up and really cause trouble.  The Station Fire is defying all predictions of those tracking it and fighting it by continuing to devour a drought-stricken landscape that has received 30% less rain over the past three years than the average year.  And that’s the trouble with climate change… we can continue to run models and make maps all we want, but we can’t see the future, so we just can’t be sure of how the weather might turn on us next.  In 2005, it was water that socked New Orleans.  In 2009, it’s fire that’s tearing up the San Gabriel Mountains just north of Los Angeles.  What will it be in 2010?  2011?  2012?
